Civil War and Emancipation Day: The 150th Anniversaries

Saturday, April 14, 2012, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Future of Richmond's Past, a partnership of nearly 20 organizations, presents the Third Annual Civil War and Emancipation Day: 150th Anniversaries. Come see your history in action! This free event will bring history to life throughout the city of Richmond, Va.

In 2010, visitors were encouraged to "Come See YOUR History in Action!" with the first city-wide event that drew more than 2,000 Richmond residents and tourists. The day included free admission to more than 15 historical sites and attractions.

The Second Annual Civil War & Emancipation Day held in 2011 saw increased crowds taking advantage of free shuttle service and free admission to an expanded offering of 26 historical sites and attractions.

This year, visitors can view cannon firing, take canal boat rides, or experience historic interpreters. Period music, a marketplace and children's games, special exhibits, and artifact washing are but a few of the highlights available throughout the city. Visit the Virginia State Capitol, Valentine Richmond History Center, Museum of the Confederacy, and Library of Virginia. Guided tours of the Richmond Slave Trail, Belle Isle, and Brown's Island will be offered. Or, hop on a Segway for a free ride or take the 10K "Liberty Walk." This year, the Boulevard Campus — a new addition in 2011 — will include guided tours at the United Daughters of the Confederacy's General Headquarters, the Confederate Chapel, the Virginia Historical Society, and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Park and ride! Free shuttle transportation will be offered by To the Bottom and Back's To the Museums and Back bus service, along with additional routes offered throughout the day. Historic Tredegar, the Maggie Walker National Historic Site, Lumpkin's Jail Site at Main Street Station, and the Boulevard Campus — the Virginia Historical Society and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts — will serve as anchor sites for free programs and shuttle departures.
